Understanding Reiki

Below are a few notes I provide clients new to the Reiki practice:

  1. Reiki is a Japanese healing technique that helps guide the universal life force (Rei) energy (ki) that we are all born with to assist in healing physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Reiki can be administered by 'laying of the hands' in person or by the same intentions that prayers are sent to others through distance healing. The Reiki practitioner facilitates the Reiki process by working with the client's own energy by intention. Long term studies are recommended to fully understand this energy healing practice.
  2. Reiki is an energy related healing practice recognized as an additional Massage and Bodywork modality by the State of Texas. The Reiki practitioner is not required to be licensed by the State of Texas since working with energy does not require manipulating muscles or direct contact with the client.
  3. In addition to Reiki; Therapeutic Touch, Theta Healing, Acupuncture, Yoga, Qigong, and Chakra Healing are also modalities that work with energy to provide healing.
  4. The universal life force energy is the reason why our bodies can naturally heal. A few examples are bruises, cuts or scratches that develop scabs, headaches, swelling, inflammation, bleeding from a cut or scratch, colds or allergies etc. all have the means to heal on it's own without medication.
  5. Stress and anxiety is a leading cause to illness, disease, mental or emotional disorders or prolongs a diagnosis recovery. Reiki is a natural way to relieve stress and anxiety without medication. It's a form of meditation or prayer; however not religious based. The Reiki technique can be used by everyone regardless of their religious beliefs.
  6. Reiki works by intentions of the facilitor (which can be self). Everything we do in life is by intentions. We intend to wake up each day, brush our teeth, take a shower, take care of our kids, significant others and home. One example of intention with a facilitator is waking up each day with the use of an alarm clock or system that facilitates the waking up process. Reiki practitioners facilitate the energy healing for the client in the same manor via intentions for the client to receive healing and love for their highest and greatest good.
  7. Distance healing is possible because energy does not recognize time or space. It's like praying for a loved one who's in the hospital and you are unable to be there with them. The power of prayer has worked time after time. Facilitating the Reiki technique for a client, family member or friend who is not in your presence works the exact same way because the intentions of a facilitator is for them to receive healing. I have personally facilitated Reiki to people located all over the country and as far as Australia and the Philippines to people who have requested it with amazing feedback. (Note: I typically will not facilitate Reiki with anyone who is driving. Reiki is very relaxing and can cause people to fall asleep without notice. I've personally watched people fall asleep in under two minutes sometimes immediately.)
  8. When receiving Reiki, the person receiving may feel tingling in their hands or feet. It is common feedback provided by clients, family and friends. The tingling is not a loss of circulation and can actually be felt all over the body depending on the person's needs. The energy flow is very subtle and relaxing and is not always felt. If present, the facilitators hands do get very warm per the feedback that has been given. If receiving a massage the same time as the Reiki; most clients love the extra warm hands!
  9. Most people are not aware of the energy from others or their environment that can affect them. Imagine walking into a room happy and the few people who are there are frustrated or moody; what's going to happen to your mood? It's probably going to drop to their mood or your happy self can change their moods. Energy is simply a mood or a vibe that can be projected on to anyone or even animals.
  10. The following are notable hospitals who incorporate Reiki: Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, George Washington University Hospital, Duke University Hospital, Harvard University, Yale New Haven Hospital, NY-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia, Stanford Medical Center, Dana-Garber/Harvard Cancer Center, Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center of Houston, California Pacific Medical Center, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, University of Maryland, Mercy Hospital of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tucson Medical Center, Hartford Hospital, Banner Health System Hospitals, University of Colorado Medical School, Albert Einstein Medical Center, University of California Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Reiki Healing Experiences

Vanessa's Personal Reflection

Reflection #1

A recent personal story of mine involves my oldest son who is 26 years old. In early May of 2018 he woke up with symptoms that he may have had a possible stroke; but at the time we were not aware of that. After the third day of symptoms I was prompted to go ahead and take him to the ER. It turns out he had Bells Palsy which temporarily paralyzed the right side of his face, he was not able to taste anything on the right side of his tongue or close his right eye. The doctors prescribed several medications including a steroid.  My son also has a history of anxiety and his position at work is very stressful. After a few days of no relief I gave him Reiki for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening. The next day he returned to work and came home and told me his symptoms had significantly been reduced and asked for more Reiki. By facilitating Reiki for him; his anxiety and stress levels were reduced allowing his body to start the healing process on it's own. He did continue his prescribed medications; however Reiki shortened the recovery period overall. As of May 15, 2018 he has fully recovered. Recovery from Bells Palsy can be 2-6 weeks or more. (Permission was given by my son to share his story.)

Reflection #2

I was attuned to Reiki Memorial Day Weekend of 2015. I immediately began using Reiki on myself so I can start my own personal journey to healing. I also began facilitating the process for my massage clients with amazing feedback. Little did I know July 20, 2015 my father would be placed in hospice after a brief stay in the hospital and shortly after a common surgical procedure. He had Parkinson's Disease. He was diagnosed with it in 1996 or 1997. Parkinson's had nothing to do with why he was in the hospital; however because his Parkinson's was so advanced his inability to do things as simple as swallowing food or medication caused his organs to shut down pretty quick after his surgery. In this case the use of Reiki was not used for the typical healing process. I was able to facilitate the healing process to provide comfort and peace to not only my father but to my mother, brother and sons as well as myself to help cope with the grieving process. My father passed away on July 22, 2015 at the young age of 76.

When a patient is in the stages of passing into eternal life; they are still able to feel their loved ones emotions, frustrations and worried mindset which are all forms of energy projected onto the patient without even realizing it or saying it verbally. Because of this sometimes it's hard for the patient to even let go to pass on because they feel it's better for their loved ones if they hang on a little longer. By facilitating Reiki; it can greatly help to provide some sort of clarity and comfort for loved ones which in turn provides the patient with a more peaceful passing. In a scenario where a patient is expected to live; facilitating Reiki with family members can assist in reducing the emotional stress and anxiety projected onto the patient. In turn as Reiki is facilitated for the patient; the recovery time can be greatly reduced.

**More reflections shared during the Reiki Workshops.

Reiki Attunements

Attunements vs. Certification

There are three levels or degrees to learning the Reiki practice. You will receive an attunement to Reiki and a certificate that you've completed a class for each level or degree taken. You cannot get "Certified in Reiki". Everyone is born with the Universal Life Force Energy. You receive an "attunement" to Reiki. An attunement is like an initiation to a process or considered a reconnection to your energy. You become in tune with your energy so you may begin your own healing practice and have the option to facilitate the healing process for others. It's considered a sacred ritual within the Reiki community and it's facilitated by the Reiki Master with the intention to pass on the Reiki knowledge to you. For example it's similar to a baptism for Christians; which is an outward expression of their faith.  A baptism can be done privately or within a group; but for many it's a very important ceremonial moment in their spiritual journey and relationship with Jesus. The attunement(s) for Reiki is felt very much the same way by Reiki students. It can be life changing immediately and very emotional for some. I personally was  filled with an abundance of gratitude and love for this very special gift of healing and could not wait to share Reiki with others.

I cannot speak for other Reiki practitioners and Reiki Masters who use the verbiage "certified" or "certification" when marketing their services or classes for Reiki. When you receive a certificate from your Reiki Master it represents completion of each level or degree taken and the new found knowledge you now have for Reiki. However, I cannot reiterate enough that you cannot get certified for Reiki because we are all born with the Universal Life Energy. The certificate(s) only represent the knowledge you have attained via the class provided from a Reiki Master. The classes help you understand the history of Reiki and provides you a platform of knowledge to begin your healing  journey which is different for everyone. Reiki is a practice you can share with others in the U.S. and across the world without a license or certificate requirement because when facilitating the Reiki technique it does not involve any type of an invasive procedure, manipulating of muscle tissue or require direct contact with a client. This information is being provided to ensure anyone new to this practice chooses their Reiki Master wisely to avoid being taken advantage of financialy or given incorrect information.

Reiki Classes

All three Reiki levels are recommended even if the student chooses not to teach.
